Ares Sterling is a husband and father with a boring job and comfortable suburban lifestyle, which allows him to forget his tragic and bloody past. But, when his wife is kidnapped, he must return to the man who is the root of his pain, his estranged father “King” (Clifton Powell). King, a notorious organized crime boss, is the key to unraveling the mystery of the disappearance of Ares’ wife, by revealing the clues he needs as he races against time to save his family from tragedy.

Powell has appeared in more than one hundred films, beginning in the 1980s. His credits include Menace II Society (1993), Dead Presidents (1995), Why Do Fools Fall in Love (1998), Rush Hour (1998), Next Friday (2000), and its 2002 sequel, Friday After Next, Woman Thou Art Loosed (2004), and Ray (2004). He played Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1999 television film Selma, Lord, Selma. On television, Powell had the recurring roles on Roc, South Central, and Army Wives, and well as guest-starred on In the Heat of the Night, Murder, She Wrote, NYPD Blue, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and House. In 2016, Powell was cast as main antagonist in the Bounce TV first prime time soap opera, Saints & Sinners opposite Vanessa Bell Calloway and Gloria Reuben. He is currently a main character on the hit Netflix dramedy Fight Night starring Kevin Hart.
Bryan G Thompson is an actor, producer, and director known for the action movies “Clutch”, “Dirt”, “Rogue Cell” and “Rogue Cell 2: Shadow Warrior“. He has appeared in over 20 films and has directed over a dozen feature films in multiple genres, including Action, Sci-fi, Comedy, Drama, and Fantasy.
Locations
Blowback is the first large-scale movie to be filmed in Hampton, Virginia (home of the Virginia Black Film Festival). Major scenes were also filmed in Laurel, Maryland and in Madrid, Spain. These locations provided a unique backdrop for the film in which the storyline takes Ares Sterling to Europe in his pursuit of the kidnappers.
The US-based stunt team is directed by world champion martial artists Willie “The Bam” Johnson, who also acts in the film. A seven-time sport karate and kung fu world champion and two-time All-American champion, Johnson is widely known for starring on the acclaimed television show “WMAC Masters” hosted by Shannon Lee (daughter of Bruce Lee) and “Masters of the Martial Arts” presented by Wesley Snipes. The Madrid-based stunt team is directed by George Karja an award-winning stunt coordinator, film director, and producer and founder of LK Stunts and LaKatana Films. An expert in various martial arts including Shaolin Kung Fu and Wushu, Karja’s skills allowed him to create a multitude of elaborate choreographed fight sequences in “Blowback” in locations in and around Madrid, Spain.
Imani Films is a production company which produces feature films in several genres, including Action, Comedy, and Drama, for worldwide distribution. The company has produced over a dozen successful projects in association with Maverick Entertainment. These films are available on a multitude of streaming platforms, including Peacock TV, Pluto TV, Fox Soul, Tubi, Prime, Crackle Hoopla, FreeVee, Plex, Pluto TV, Redbox, Roku, Samsung, Vudu, Xumo, Sling TV, and Maverick Black Cinema.
Blowback will premiere in Europe on Friday, May 9th at the Toledo Action Festival (TACFEST) at the Centro Cultural de Illescas in Toledo, Spain. Blowback will premiere in the United States on Saturday, June 21st at the Virginia Black Film Festival at the American Theatre in Hampton, Virginia. Estimated date of release on streaming platforms in August 1st (subject to change).
Imani Films is currently in various stages of development on multiple projects, including the action-thriller Rough Dog starring George Karja, the biopic “The Bam” about Willie Bam Johnson starring Messiah Johnson, and several others.
